Hard fought victory to finish the season!

An another wet and wild Sydney winter’s night, I trudged back into the city for the last game of the regular season. Well the last game of the whole season actually as we couldn’t make the semi finals, having won only 1 game all year! Before the game we were sitting in 6th place (out of 12) due to a proliferations of draws, byes and forfeits in our advantage.

We didn’t have any subs so it was just Charlie, Joe, Gary, Tom and I who took to the field against the team placed 3rd and who had only lost one game all season.

We have actually played this team on a few occasions over the past few years and so knew what to expect, a well organised, disciplined outfit who would fight hard, especially with a place in the semi’s up for grabs for them.

We started slowly (again) and were lucky not to go a goal down early on before we gradually got into the game and went 1-0 courtesy a delightful left foot finish from yours truly. Even though I say so myself it was a good goal, beating the keeper at the near post from the angle. The rest of the half was a tight affair with no quarter given by either side.

The second half was much the same as the first and Gary put us 2-0 up with about 5 mins to play with a nice finish again from the angle. Sloppy defending let them get one back with 30 seconds to play but we managed to hold out to secure only our second actual victory of the season!

Overall a good performance from the boys and despite our numbers (they had 2 subs!), we deserved the win as we fought well for each other and were defensively strong.

As we didn’t make the semi finals, we now have a 3 week break before the start of the spring season. Rumour has it we will be playing in replica Mexican kits too..
