I was trying to remember the last time we were beaten....i didnt play in the grand final last season and so it was before then, probably against Setanta about 4 months ago - anyway a very long time.
So last night was 1 vs 2 us being the 1. To be fair to them, they were a well organised team, had a good defence and an excellent keeper who seemed to hold on to everything that was thrown at him. But they weren't the best team we have played this season. Whereas our goalkeeping was less than great and we suffered from making too many basic errors at the back and gifting them goals.
The final score ended up 4-2 to them, having been 3-0 down at half time.
In reality we didnt play that badly but just couldnt finish, whether it was 1 on 1's or other opportunities. We also suffered as we were missing both Ben, Charlie and Rich and so defensively we weren't as tight as we should have been. I have to take the blame for at least 1, possibly 2 of the goals, as i was guilty of trying to push ambitious passes through to our forwards, only for the passes to be intercepted and then capitalised on for their goals.
I did manage to even a few things up with another goal, from another free kick and i thought i was unlucky with a couple of shots on goal that the keeper managed to deflect somehow. But then that was the story of our night.
Last night also confirmed what i have always thought in that we struggle to pass our way through defensive minded teams with our best attacking ploy being the quick break away. Basically. we arent good when we have to think about things!
On the upside, we have already qualified for the semi's with 3 games still to go and so we will most likely have to play this lot again if we are to win the comp. Next time i am confident that with Rich and/or Ben in the team we could beat them if we knock out the errors and put away our chances.
So to end on a positive, this may be the loss that we need to give us a kick up the backside going into the semis. the only problem is that we cant get back on the horse immediately as we have a bye next week! Very frustrating.
Team was me, Gary, Tom, Keith and Dave. No subs.
