Ok, so now i have the introductions out of the way...onto my first bloggable activity(ies)!
Wednesday night is Berocca Seniors night. Now for those who may not be aware, Berocca Seniors is the name of the 5-a-side team that I play for on a Wednesday night at Cook and Phillip Park sports hall in the city. I have been playing for them in various guises basically since i arrived in Sydney some 9 years ago! The team plays in orange (due principally to the availability of cheap, retro Dutch kits at the time ($5) from a dodgy place near Town Hall) and we have had mixed success over the years.
We currently play in the second division of two, mainly at our request due to a particularly harsh season in div 1 last year when we got regularly spanked by younger, more fitter teams. The team is basically made up of ex-pats with not one Australian to be seen. Rich, Ben, Dave and i have played from day 1 with the Irish contingent having only recently joined.
Currently, we are top of the league in the Spring season having won all but one of our games so far...so the rebuilding is going well.
Last night we managed to keep the unbeaten start to the season up with a resounding 6-1 victory. Not the most satisfying of games for some reason given that our opposition are bottom of the league, but a win non-the less. No goals for me, but given that i see my role to stop the goals rather than score them i wasnt too bothered. Leave the scoring to the Irish contingent! Aside from the odd free kick that is...and the odd shot from my own half as well.
Overall an average performance. Probably due to the late kick off, and the fact that we had no subs due to injuries and Irish rock bands playing at Luna Park. Playing with only 5 when your opposition has 5 subs is hard!
Due to the fact that the footy didnt kick off until 8.30pm i headed up early to the pool at Cook and Phillip beforehand for a swim. Unfortunately i hadnt been in the pool for a good 2, maybe 3 months so i wasnt expecting anything...apart from a slow painful slog up the slow lane. Unfortunately i was right....and i swam perhaps the slowest i have swam for a good while, managing just 500m + 200m in about 21 minutes all up. But at least it was in the medium lane. Slow consolation though as it was very slow...and doesnt bode well for the triathlon season ahead...i sense more breaststroke ahead at Kurnell. Sore arms afterwards...i need to do more swimming...
